Security cameras can keep footage for hours, days, weeks, or months. The available history depends on storage capacity, recording settings, the number of streams recorded, and the rules for deleting or overwriting older video.
That history is called retention: how far back you can go to review a recording. Many local systems keep a rolling archive, replacing the oldest footage as storage fills. Cloud services may delete recordings when they reach the age limit set by your plan.
The practical question is simple: Will the footage still be there when you need it? To answer it, start with your review needs, calculate the storage required, and check the archive after installation.
What Determines How Long Footage Is Stored?
Two things set the limits: how quickly your system uses storage and whether it has a rule that removes recordings after a certain time.
Bitrate is the amount of video data produced each second. It is one of the most useful numbers for estimating storage: a higher average bitrate means more data to store over the same period.
Resolution alone does not tell you how large recordings will be. The codec - the method used to compress video-frame rate, compression settings, and scene activity also matter. With variable bitrate, data use can rise or fall as the scene changes.

Start With the Review Window You Need
Before choosing a drive, consider how long an incident could go unnoticed.
You might check a missing delivery the same day but discover damage to your yard after a vacation. A business may need to investigate a transaction dispute weeks later. Warehouse staff may need footage from several shifts to trace when an item was damaged.
Ask:
- How much time could pass before someone notices a problem?
- Who will review the footage, and how quickly can they save it?
- Which camera views need the longest history?
- Are there insurer, contract, or applicable regulatory requirements to confirm?
Build your retention target around both discovery time and review time. If an incident is noticed near the end of the archive window, someone still needs time to find and export the recording.
Different views may need different recording priorities, depending on what the system supports.
Continuous vs. Motion Recording: Which Is Better for Retention?
Event recording can make storage last longer when activity is limited. Continuous recording provides a fuller timeline, including moments that might never trigger a detection rule.
Continuous recording
Continuous recording captures video throughout its configured operating period. It gives you context before, during, and after an incident without depending entirely on motion detection.
The tradeoff is storage use: video keeps accumulating even when little happens.
Motion or event recording
Event recording captures video when configured detection or scenario conditions are met. At comparable video settings, fewer recorded hours usually mean less storage use.
The savings depend on the scene. A quiet side entrance may generate occasional clips, while a busy warehouse aisle may trigger recordings throughout the day. Pre-event and post-event recording, where supported, also add to the total.
Test detection under realistic conditions. Missed triggers or poorly chosen rules can leave gaps in the footage you need.
Scheduled or mixed recording
Where supported, you can record during selected hours or use different modes for different cameras. A critical entrance might record continuously while a less active area records on events.

What Happens When Camera Storage Is Full?
With loop recording enabled, new video replaces the oldest footage when the allocated storage fills. Your archive keeps moving forward, and older recordings become unavailable.
Other configurations may stop recording, issue a storage warning, or delete video according to an age limit. Cloud services follow their own retention policies, so check how your installed system behaves.
A maximum archive age is a limit, not a storage guarantee. Setting a 30-day limit does not mean the recorder has enough capacity to hold 30 days. Choosing “unlimited” does not create more disk space.
Ajax NVR provides both a maximum archive-depth setting and a current-depth status, described in the NVR manual. Checking the actual depth helps you see whether the system is delivering the history you planned.
How Much Storage Do Security Cameras Need?
Storage requirements depend on how much data your cameras record over the period you want to keep.
The basic relationship is:
Recorded streams × average bitrate × recording hours per day × retention days = estimated video storage, after converting units.
For cameras with different settings, calculate each stream or group separately and add the results. Include audio where recorded, then account for usable capacity and variation in operating conditions.
An 8 TB drive, by itself, tells you little about retention. The same drive can hold very different amounts of history depending on camera count, bitrate, and recording schedules.
Does higher resolution use more storage?
It can, if it increases the amount of data recorded. But 4K does not automatically use exactly four times the storage of 1080p; bitrate and compression settings also affect the result.
Before lowering image quality to extend retention, review actual recordings. A longer archive is useful only if the footage still shows the detail you need.
How to Estimate Storage With the Ajax Calculator
The official Ajax Video Storage Calculator estimates either required capacity or recording time for camera and NVR configurations.
- If you have a retention target: Enter the desired number of days, daily recording hours, and planned cameras and streams to estimate capacity.
- If you already have a drive: Enter its capacity and the planned recording settings to estimate how much history it can hold.
Treat either result as a planning estimate to verify after installation.
Example: Four cameras recording for 14 days
An illustrative configuration using the calculator’s advanced NVR capacity settings includes:
GOP describes how frames are grouped for compression. Variable-bitrate quality controls are inactive in this example because both streams use constant bitrate.
The recorded calculator result for this configuration was 3 TB. The example includes both streams from each camera.
This estimate is not a guaranteed 14-day archive or a drive recommendation. It does not establish a separate allowance for audio, and operating conditions can affect required capacity. Recalculate with your actual settings and check storage compatibility before buying a drive.
Local vs. Cloud Storage: Where Does the Footage Live?
Recordings may be stored inside a camera, on a network video recorder, in a cloud archive, or in a supported combination.
Storage inside the camera
Some cameras record to local media, such as a microSD card. The referenced Ajax BulletCam manual specifies a 32–256 GB microSD card rated V30 or faster.
Check the requirements for your exact model before choosing a card.
NVR storage
How long does NVR footage last? It depends on the total recorded bitrate, recording schedule, usable drive capacity, and any configured archive-age limit.
A network video recorder, or NVR, stores recordings from connected network cameras in one place. Ajax’s storage guidance for the referenced NVR lists support for a drive up to 16 TB.
That limit applies to the documented recorder and should not be assumed for every Ajax model.
Cloud storage
Cloud retention depends on the provider’s plan, recording rules, and expiration policy.
Being able to watch footage in an app does not mean it is stored in the cloud. Confirm where the archive resides and what determines when recordings disappear.
How to Save Important Footage Before It Is Overwritten
Export important footage as soon as you find it. A clip left in the rolling archive remains subject to the system’s overwrite and deletion rules.
- Locate the incident. Confirm the camera, date, and time.
- Include context. Select useful footage before and after the event.
- Choose the export quality. Make sure it preserves the detail you need.
- Complete the download. Save the file outside the rolling archive.
- Check playback. Open the saved file and verify the view, timing, and full sequence.
- Keep a separate backup. Retain the original export if the recording matters long term.
Ajax supports archive review and video downloads with the required storage and permissions. Exports from Ajax NVR running firmware 2.244 or later include a digital signature that Ajax Media Player can verify to check file integrity.
For long-term preservation, keep the original export and maintain its backups. One saved copy on one device is not a permanent safeguard.
Can deleted or overwritten footage be recovered?
Do not count on recovery once footage has been overwritten or removed from the available archive. First check for an export, backup, or another configured recording destination that may still hold a copy.
Deletion and overwriting are different processes, but neither offers a dependable recovery plan. Saving footage while it is available is the more reliable approach.
Check the Archive After Installation
A storage estimate gives you a starting point. The installed system shows whether your plan works.
As recordings accumulate:
- Check the oldest footage you can still open.
- Confirm that critical cameras record during the intended hours.
- Test event detection and the context captured around each event.
- Complete a trial export and check the downloaded file.
- Recalculate after adding cameras or changing recording settings.
Avoid assuming every system keeps 30 days, applying identical settings to every view, or buying storage without defining the required review window. Allow for future expansion when selecting capacity.
