How Should Loading Docks and Overhead Doors Be Planned?
Loading docks and overhead doors need separate plans because they combine frequent access, large openings, changing light, moving employees, and trailer obstructions. Each opening should have a defined operating schedule, alarm treatment, camera goal, and device name.
For each dock or door, confirm:
- when it is active and whether it remains open during business hours;
- who opens it and what should happen if it opens after hours;
- whether nearby motion detection belongs in the same alarm area or a separate group;
- where a trailer, dock leveler, column, or stored pallet can block a camera or detector;
- how glare, headlights, shadows, and indoor-to-outdoor contrast affect the view; and
- the exact device name, such as Dock 4 Overhead Door, rather than Zone 12.
Do not assume one wide camera can cover every dock or produce identification-quality detail at every distance.
Plan the Warehouse Floor Around Racking and Movement
Review long aisles, cross-aisles, mezzanines, cages, priority storage, and routes between docks and offices. Rack height and inventory placement matter because clear sight lines in an empty building may disappear after stocking.
Forklifts, equipment, heat sources, dust, airflow, and daytime activity can affect placement. Distinguish normal operations from after-hours detection and identify sections that may need independent arming. Use floor plans to prepare, but test proposed locations with relevant racks, equipment, and obstructions in place.
Separate Offices, Equipment Rooms, and Staff Entrances
Offices, records, network and electrical rooms, equipment rooms, staff entrances, and visitor routes may require different schedules, detection, camera treatment, and permissions from the warehouse floor.
Define necessary access and whether the system supports individual app accounts, personal codes, cards, or tags. Avoid shared credentials where individual access is available. How Should Warehouse Cameras Be Planned for Useful Evidence?
Warehouse cameras should be planned around the footage a reviewer would need, not around a camera count. Each view should have one primary job: general awareness, event reconstruction, or targeted detail at a predictable point.
- General awareness: Show activity and traffic flow across a defined area.
- Event reconstruction: Follow movement through entrances, docks, aisles, or vehicle routes.
- Targeted detail: Capture a closer view where more detail is required.
Evaluate distance, mounting height, angle, lighting, glare, shadows, trailers, racks, and other obstructions. Confirm whether each view records continuously, by event, or through a supported combination. Define retention, permissions, time settings, review, and export before an incident occurs.
Object detection, including person or vehicle classification, is not the same as facial identification, facial recognition, or readable license-plate capture. Plan Alarm Groups and Daily Arming States
List the daily security states the facility needs, such as fully open, receiving only, office only, cleaning access, partially armed, and fully closed. Then decide whether the main floor, docks, offices, yards, or other sections require separate alarm groups.
